Fall: Football, Leaves, and Pests

Cindy Mannes

As the summer comes to a close and everyone gears up for football season, pests are just looking for a place to keep warm. Many pests just tend to disappear or leave the cooler areas once summer is over, but some pests just want to stick around for a while longer and see if they can shack up in your home.

Every fall, the amount of pest related calls increases and is usually regarding one of our top five fall pests. We want to provide you with that list of top five pests and tips to prevent them from invading your home this season.

Stay Protected from these 5 Common Household Pests This Fall

Rodents: These furry little football fans are anxious to get inside for the fall weather, and their cunning ways make it extremely easy for them. Rodents, such as mice and rats, are notorious for building nests in insulation, chewing through wiring (creating fire hazards), and spreading diseases. They can squeeze through cracks and holes in your foundation and usually have fleas, mites, ticks, and lice hitchhiking on their backs. Rodents can reproduce at a high rate, so if you suspect an infestation, a pest professional should be contacted immediately.

Stink Bugs: Brown marmorated stink bugs love the fall because it gives them the chance to sneak inside and attempt to become the new family pet. Unlike the family dog, these pests put off a strong odor to repel predators when frightened, disturbed, or squashed. While they cannot sting or bite, stink bugs can ruin clothes, fabrics, or furniture with their droppings. They hitch rides in cars and in personal belongings to get inside the house, so make sure to check your things before going inside to prevent a new family pest.

Bed Bugs: Beg bugs are not known for diseases, but these pesky creatures are notoriously known for the little, itchy, red welts they leave behind on their victims. Bed bugs are one of the craftiest pests, catching rides on clothing, suitcases, and schoolbags to get inside your house and up to the bed for a nap. To minimize the risk of giving them a ride into your home, always check hotel rooms before unpacking, keep personal belongings off the floor, and check all suitcases and bags when returning home.

Ants: There are several types of ants that love to be in and around the house during the fall months. Causing some serious damage besides a little bite, carpenter ants can damage the structure of a home and the odorous house ants can contaminate food items. Preventing ants from being around your house is not easy, but to start you should seal all cracks around the foundation and seal food items in airtight containers. Also, do not store firewood and building materials next to or inside the house.

Cockroaches: Cockroaches are the most common and dangerous pests on our list. They have the potential to spread 33 kinds of bacteria and can cause asthma attacks in children. These little pests are usually found around pipes and drains or hidden behind/under things, so make sure you keep bathrooms and kitchens sanitized. Vacuum frequently and make sure that all cracks around the home are sealed.

These five pests are not the only ones you could possibly see, but they are the most common. We hope that these tips will help you have a pest-free fall, and remember to contact a pest professional immediately if you suspect an infestation.
